What is CBD?

CBD or cannabidiol, is a naturally occurring compound found in the resinous flower of cannabis, a plant with a rich history as a medicine going back thousands of years. Today the therapeutic properties of CBD are being tested and confirmed by scientists and doctors around the world. A safe, non-addictive substance, CBD is one of more than 80 “phytocannabinoids,” which are unique to cannabis and endow the plant with its robust therapeutic profile.

Choosing CBD for your pets could be one of the most supportive and loving things you can do for them. Begin with a high-quality oil and adjust the serving size in small increments until you find what dosage suits your pet and gives them the wellness care they deserve.

Please know, research on CBD oil for dogs and cats is ongoing, however you’ll find many websites filled with positive testimonials on the benefits of CBD for pets from happy owners who use it to support pet wellness as part of a healthy lifestyle.

CBD products for pets offer a wide range of natural health-boosting benefits for your dog or cat. Consider CBD for overall wellness, excitability, assistance with resting or sleeping, or even for their skin and coat.  The most popular form of CBD for pets is via an oil or tincture.  This format allows you to squirt the oil into their mouth or use the dropper to add their favorite food.  For some pets, follow the dosage of oil with their preferred treat!

CBD products for pets come in a wide range of flavors and applications to make it easier for you to give it to your pet. Do your research however since many flavors are synthetic and many brands hide toxic ingredient elements under label copy called, “Natural Flavors”.  This can be equated to “Fragrance” in topicals – you really never know what ingredients are included in “Fragrance” or “Natural Flavors.”  As a brand, we are partial to not adding flavoring systems to our products – bacon and peanut butter “flavors” are not usually “natural” even though they sound like they are.  Many times, “Natural Flavors” can include a blend of 30-40 different ingredients.

Do your research, read the packaging materials that come with your CBD oil and talk to your veterinarian. While clinical research is still ongoing for CBD application for pets, many vets are currently recommending CBD for pets for a variety of reasons.  If at any point you see an adverse response, immediately stop usage of the products and contact your veterinarian.

How Does CBD Affect Your Pets?

Scientists know that cannabinoids interact with the endocannabinoid receptors located in the central and peripheral nervous systems of mammals, which help maintain balance in the body and keep it in a normal healthy state.  The endocannabinoid receptors are a key element in the Endocannabinoid System (ECS).   Understanding how the ECS works will help you become more comfortable with using CBD for your pets and for yourself.

CBD for Cats / CBD for Dogs: Daily Routine

Using CBD oil for your pet typically involves a two-step process, along with optional add-ons as needed. In the morning, give your pet the first of two daily servings along with their morning meal. You can add the CBD oil directly to their food or give it to them directly on their tongue. In the evening, you can give the second serving for those pets who need it.

Other typical times for dosing your pet is before or after a long walk (dogs typically, but cats do take walks with their owners too!), during times when fireworks are being set off or during thunderstorms.  Basically, all times which can make our loving pets a little nervous. Just be sure to stay within the daily serving recommendations on the product package.

If you and your veterinarian decide that you should try CBD as a treatment for your dog, there are a few things to keep in mind when purchasing CBD oil. As mentioned above, not all oils are the same; you’ll want high-quality CBD oil to have a better chance of it working.

-  Look for organic. If the CBD oil is not organic or grown using organic farming practices, it at least should not contain pesticides, fungicides, or solvents.  There are many solvents used in hemp biomass extraction includes, butane, propane, hexane, ethanol, CO2.  Vitalibis uses hot air to exact our oils, the highest quality and safety oils available today.

-  Don’t shop based solely on price. Higher quality and purity are usually associated with a higher cost. Higher priced brands also carry product insurance when most CBD brands do not qualify for or can’t afford insurance. A cheaper option oil could contain toxic substances such as pesticides, herbicides, or heavy metals. Make sure your CBD oil is free of additives.

-  Get the analysis. The brand should provide a certificate that certifies the amount of CBD that is in the product. Many CBD products contain only small amounts of CBD. You’ll also want to make sure there is little or no THC in the product.

-  Buy CBD as a liquid. You can buy pet treats containing CBD, but the best form to administer is an oil or tincture. This way, you can adjust your dog’s dose drop by drop.

Possible Side Effects of CBD in Your Pets

While there’s no scientific data on the side effects of CBD usage for dogs, there are potential side effects based on how CBD affects humans. To minimize any potential side effects, make sure you are following the proper dosage.

-  Dry mouth: some studies have shown that CBD can decrease the production of saliva. This would then manifest as an increased thirst.

-  Lowered blood pressure: some studies have shown that high doses of CBD have been known to cause a temporary drop in blood pressure. Even though the drop is small, it might create a brief feeling of light-headedness.

-  Drowsiness: the calming effect of CBD can also cause slight drowsiness, especially when using higher doses.
